Santa Bárbara y la representación dramática de la santidad en los siglos XVI y XVII

Abstract

We present an analysis of five dramatic renditions of the life of Saint Barbara, the fourthcentury Christian martyr. The plays, composed within 16th and 17th centuries, cover the evolution of Castilian hagiographical theatre, from its origin to its peak. By analyzing several representative scenes, we assess how different theatrical conceptions were at the service of hagiography, and how the legend of Saint Barbara was brought up to date in order to show different ways of representing sainthood. We show thus that two confluent impulses converged in the consolidation of hagiographical theatre: the development of scenic practices and the pragmatic aims of hagiography.

Se presenta un recorrido por las cinco versiones dramáticas de la vida de santa Bárbara, mártir cristiana del siglo IV, compuestas durante los siglos XVI y XVII, desde los orígenes del teatro hagiográfico castellano hasta los tiempos de mayor auge del género. A partir del análisis de algunas escenas fundamentales, se valora el modo en que diversas concepciones escénico-dramáticas se pusieron al servicio del aprovechamiento de la hagiografía y cómo la leyenda de santa Bárbara pudo actualizarse en función de diferentes pautas de representación de la santidad. Se muestra así que en la consolidación del teatro hagiográfico convergieron dos fuerzas confluyentes: el desarrollo de las prácticas escénicas y la proyección pragmática de la hagiografía.
