Soberanía y defensa de la riqueza forestal en la frontera vasconavarra con Francia durante el siglo XVIII

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyse the consolidation process of Spanish Monarchy’s authority and sovereignty over the Basque and Navarrese timber reserves, and, thus, over the Pyrenean Western borderline, in order to guarantee the Spanish Royal Navy’s supply. This process was completed at the end of the eighteenth century, when, on the one hand, during the British-Spanish War, the Spanish Monarchy was forced to intensively resort to the Pyrenean timber reserves, and, on the other hand, to secure a bigger control over the French frontiers, bearing in mind the revolutionary period. Although, until this time, the conflicts, around the pasture rights, were solved by the local communities, since the end of the eighteenth century, Spanish and French Monarchies were compelled to intervene and, through the cartography, to accurately define their limits.

La presente investigación trata de analizar el proceso de consolidación de la autoridad y soberanía de la Monarquía Hispánica sobre las riquezas forestales vasconavarras y, por ende, sobre la frontera pirenaica occidental, a fin de garantizar la provisión de maderas de la Real Armada. Dicho proceso culminó a finales del siglo XVIII, cuando, por un lado, en el contexto de la guerra contra Gran Bretaña, la Monarquía se vio obligada a acudir de forma intensiva a las reservas forestales del Pirineo vasconavarro, y, por otro, a tener un mayor control sobre la frontera con Francia, inmersa en un complicado período revolucionario. Si. hasta entonces. los conflictos en torno a las facerías y comunidades de pasto habían sido resueltos de una forma más o menos amistosa por las comunidades de ambos lados, a partir de finales del siglo xviii los Estados se vieron obligados a intervenir y, a través de la cartografía, a definir perfectamente sus límites.
