Los hombres del obispo: vicarios y jueces eclesiásticos regionales. Michoacán, 1633-1666

Abstract

In this article we study the judge of the Catholic Church named «vicar and ecclesiastical judge» whose actions were done in an specific region. We will do it through the study of three Michoacan priests, representatives of the middle clergy of the seventeenth century (1638-1666): Pedro Gutiérrez Rangel, Diego Correa Gudiño and Juan Pardo de Quesada. We divide the study into four sections: an introduction in which we present the problem and the sources; a brief characterization of the institution according to doctrine and canon law; the trajectory of our characters; and an invitation to a broader reflection. As we will see, these judges played a strategic role in the pastoral and judicial action of the bishops.

En este artículo estudiaremos al juez delegado regional de la Iglesia Católica llamado foráneo o vicario juez eclesiástico. Lo haremos a través de las actuaciones de tres sacerdotes michoacanos, representantes del clero medio en el segundo tercio del siglo XVII: Pedro Gutiérrez Rangel, Diego Correa Gudiño y Juan Pardo de Quesada. Dividimos el estudio en cuatro apartados: una introducción en que presentamos el problema y sus fuentes; una breve caracterización según la doctrina y el Derecho canónico; la trayectoria de nuestros personajes y; una invitación a la reflexión. Como veremos, estos jueces jugaron un papel estratégico en la acción pastoral y judicial de los obispos.
