Programa visual de la capilla del Espíritu Santo en la Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba

Abstract

Against the backdrop of the Counter-Reformation and Humanism, the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba’s Chapel of the Holy Spirit, erected by the bishops and archdeacons of the eminent Simancas family, beginning in 1568, houses decorations and a set of artistic works revealing the existence of a visual programme clearly reflecting an interest in transmitting their fame and power, the prestige of their surname, and their prominence as defenders of the Christian faith in the wake of the emphatic resolutions adopted at the Council of Trent, especially those related to the veneration of relics and the sacraments of the Eucharist and baptism.

En el ambiente propiciado por la Contrarreforma y el Humanismo, la capilla del Espíritu Santo de la Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba, erigida por los obispos y arcedianos Simancas a partir de 1568, alberga una decoración y un conjunto de obras artísticas que revelan la existencia de un programa visual que respondía plenamente al interés por manifestar su fama y poder, el prestigio de su apellido y su protagonismo como valedores de la fe cristiana a la luz de las resoluciones dogmáticas adoptadas en el Concilio de Trento, especialmente aquellas relacionadas con la veneración de las reliquias y los sacramentos de la eucaristía y el bautismo.
