Leña, carbón y madera en los Montes de Toledo: aprovechamiento, regulación y conflictos (siglos XVI-XIX)

Abstract

For centuries, resources from the forests were indispensable for the survival and daily life both in the rural world and in the cities. Wood, used for the construction and manufacture of tools, coal and firewood were considered essential fuels for households and for the operation of numerous crafts and became essential elements whose use needed to be carefully regulated by both the kingdom’s and local authorities. The main objective of the present study is to analyse the conflicts which derived from the use of these resources and its impact in the courts of justice for the violation of the ordinances in a territory in the interior of Castile, the <em>Montes de Toledo</em>, which was subject to the feudal regime of the City Council of the capital.

Durante siglos, los recursos procedentes de los montes fueron indispensables para la supervivencia y el transcurrir de la vida cotidiana en el mundo rural y en las ciudades. Madera para la construcción y elaboración de útiles, carbón y leña, considerados combustibles imprescindibles para los hogares y para el funcionamiento de numerosos oficios artesanales, se convirtieron en elementos esenciales cuyo aprovechamiento necesitaba estar minuciosamente reglamentado tanto por las autoridades del reino como por las locales. El estudio presentado tiene como objetivo principal analizar los conflictos derivados del aprovechamiento de estos recursos y su reflejo en los tribunales de justicia por vulneración de las ordenanzas, en un territorio del interior de Castilla, los Montes de Toledo, sometido al régimen señorial del ayuntamiento de la capital.
