The accident of the oil tanker Prestige off the coast of Galicia en 2002 caused an ecological disaster and other damages, because the contents of its tanks fell into the Atlantic Ocean. After the arrest of Mr. Mangouras, his captain, and the imposition of a bail of three million euros by the Spanish Courts to release him, given the evidence of the commission of certain crimes, Mr. Mangouras (a Greek national) took the matter before the European Court of Human Rights considering that the amount of the same was excessive and violated the European Convention of Human Rights. The work analyzes the judicial iter of the matter and the consequences that for its author are extracted from the pronouncement of the Strasbourg Court.
