De Nebrija a Quevedo: vida y fortuna del término "figura"

Abstract

This article examines the lexicographical treatment of the lemma <i>figura</i> in the lexicographical tradition before and during Quevedo’s time, in order to compare this tradition with the use of the term <i>figura</i> and its lexical family in the works of the writer. To that effect, the author offers a compilation of the texts where these uses appear, concluding that most are not registered in the lexicographical tradition. The use of the term in Quevedo responds to the meaning of the etymological root (<i>fingere</i>) transmitted by Latin writers and to the extraordinary individual genius of Quevedo.

El presente artículo examina el tratamiento lexicográfico del lema <i>figura</i> en la tradición diccionarística anterior y contemporánea de Quevedo, con el fin de comparar esta con los usos verbales de la voz <i>figura</i> y su familia léxica en las obras del escritor. Para ello se lleva a cabo una recopilación de los textos donde aparecen esos usos, llegando a la conclusión de que en su mayoría no se encuentran registrados en dicha tradición: responden al sentido de la raíz etimológica (<i>fingere</i>) transmitido por los escritores latinos y al extraordinario genio individual de Quevedo.
