«La dea Libya» en el imaginario mítico

Abstract

This contribution analyses the genesis, construction, and consolidation of the iconic image of <em>Libya, </em>which differs from other Graeco–Roman territorial personifications in the par ticular impor tance of its mythical–religious basis, resulting from a process of syncretism between Greek and autochthonous Libyan worlds. Through the detailed study of several documental sources (literature, iconography, epigraphy, and numismatics), we present an itinerary from the first testimonies from the 6th c. BC to the evidence of the 2nd c. AD, when the personification of <em>Libya </em>is fully integrated in the propagandistic system of the Roman Empire.

Esta contribución analiza la génesis, construcción y consolidación de la imagen icónica de <em>Libya</em>, que difiere de otras personificaciones territoriales de época grecorromana en la particular relevancia de su trasfondo mítico–religioso, resultado de un proceso de sincretismo entre el mundo griego y el líbico autóctono. A través del estudio detallado de diversas fuentes documentales (literarias, iconográficas, epigráficas y numismáticas), se realiza un recorrido desde los primeros testimonios del siglo VI a. C. hasta las evidencias del siglo II d. C., cuando la personificación de <em>Libya </em>se encuentra plenamente integrada en el aparato propagandístico del Imperio romano.
