The ‘principle of the best’ refered to the actually existing world is
at the same time a ‘principle of contingency’ whenever the criterion
of maximum composibility is taken into account. As it is well
known, this last criterion is that which governs God’s creative
election. The paper explains this issue in the context of Leibniz’s
modal ontology.
