¿Identidad Cristiana étnica? El Caso de Diogn 1.1

Abstract

El carácter étnico del cristianismo primitivo es un tema debatido en la actualidad. La referencia a γένος presente en el comienzo de la Carta a Diogneto es aducida con frecuencia para defender una comprensión racial/étnica de la identidad cristiana. Para algunos autores esta interpretación se apoya en las referencias a la expresión «tercer γένος/genus» que se encuentra en otros escritores cristianos anteriores o contemporáneos a Diogn. El presente trabajo aboga por una interpretación no étnica del término, analizando el significado de γένος en combinación con ἐπιτήδευμα, la palabra que le sigue unida por ἢ. Mediante ejemplos tomados de la literatura griega clásica y cristiana, se sostiene que con τοῦτο γένος ἢ ἐπιτήδευμα el autor de la carta se está refiriendo principalmente al modo de vida de los cristianos en la sociedad en que habitan sin connotaciones étnicas

The ethnic character of early Christianity is a disputed subject. The reference to γένος at the beginning of the Letter to Diognetus is often mentioned in the debate to support a racial/ethnic understanding of Christian identity. For some scholars this interpretation would seem to be supported by the expression «third γένος/genus», which is found in Christian writers prior or contemporary to Diogn. The present paper advocates a non-ethnic interpretation of the term, by analysing the meaning of γένος in combination with ἐπιτήδευμα, the word that follows γένος and is united to it by ἢ. With examples taken from classical and Christian Greek literature, it is argued that for the author of Diogn. τοῦτο γένος ἢ ἐπιτήδευμα refers mainly to the way of life of Christians in the society in which they live, with no ethnic connotations.
