A. Bonet y J. L. Sert. El espíritu “renacentista” en el impulso de una modernidad trasatlántica en clave mediterránea

Abstract

A finales de 1920, los arquitectos Sert y Torres Clavé encontraron en el espíritu del renacimiento, en el estudio de las revistas modernas europeas y en el contacto con Le Corbusier y los CIAM, la inspiración para hacer del GATCPAC un motor de nuevas propuestas en arquitectura, urbanismo y mobiliario en claves mediterráneas. Un joven Antonio Bonet, todavía estudiante, colaboró en este cometido para años después, entre 1938 y 1950, hacer renacer en Buenos Aires el espíritu vanguardista de sus años formativos. A través de la revisión comparativa de proyectos de diversa naturaleza —editorial, urbanística y en torno a la figura de Gaudí—, desarrollados respectivamente por Sert y Bonet en sus particulares experiencias americanas entre 1938 y 1960, este artículo pretende descubrir paralelismos que contribuyeron al desarrollo de una modernidad mediterránea y trasatlántica, en la que la actitud de “renacer” fue reiterada.

In the late 1920s, the architects Sert and Torres Clavé found in the spirit of the Renaissance, in the study of European modern magazines and in the contact with Le Corbusier and the CIAM, the inspiration to make GATCPAC a driving force for new proposals in architecture, urban planning and furniture in Mediterranean style. A young Antonio Bonet, still a student, collaborated in this task and years later, between 1938 and 1950 in Buenos Aires, he revived the avant-garde spirit of his formative years. Through a comparative review of projects of different nature — editorial, urban planning, and related with the figure of Gaudí—, developed respectively by Sert and Bonet in their particular American experiences between 1938 and 1960, this article aims to discover some similarities that contributed to the development of a Mediterranean and transatlantic modernity, in which the attitude of “rebirth” was reiterated.
